Why I need to have my teeth cleaned at least 2 times a year?
More than 50 years ago there were no guidelines for how often you should go to the dentist. Most patients went when they needed something fixed rather than preventing the problem. To help patients dental and health organizations set the standards for preventive dentistry. Their main focus was on educating people that gum disease and cavities are preventable.
Even though the standard is for patients to see their dentist twice a year, it should really be based on each person’s oral hygiene, dental history, medical conditions, and habits. Assuming you take excellent care of your gums and teeth, it is still important to see the dentist regularly. Dr. Michaelson checks for problems you may not see or be aware of. Most dental emergencies don’t become obvious until they are more advanced such as gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer. Detecting these problems at an earlier stage can make fixing them more manageable and less costly.
Many people can get away with seeing our office twice a year. Others may need to be seen more frequently. Patients with high risk or history of gum disease or cavities may be advised to visit three to four times per year.
