Caring for Veneers

Example of Veneers | Dentist in Orlando FL

Veneers are one of the most versatile cosmetic options when it comes to restoring your teeth. They can correct shape, color, size, and alignment of teeth. One important factor about veneers is that once bonded to your natural teeth they are very strong. Veneers are cared for just like natural teeth. Flossing and brushing twice daily will ensure their longevity, as will having your routine check-ups and cleanings at our office.

Common Sense:

Chewing on hard plastic or ice can damage or chip your natural teeth and the same can happen to veneers. Avoiding things like hard candy will also increase the lifetime of your veneers.

Maintaining Regular Hygiene Checkups:

Veneers can collect plaque and build up tartar just like your natural teeth. This is why it’s so important to keep up with your dental hygiene checkups. Not only are we removing build up in areas you can’t reach, we are also checking to make sure you don’t have cavities. Veneers themselves don’t get cavities, but cavities are possible to get where the veneer meets your natural tooth. This area is called the margin and is normally near your gum line. At Dr. Michaelson’s office, we use a special non-abrasive paste to polish your teeth and veneers. Using something rough or abrasive can scratch the veneer. This is also why using any toothpaste that says whitening on it, should be avoided.

Grinding and Clenching:

Some people have veneers placed due to wear of their teeth. This can be caused by grinding or clenching. Most people don’t even realize they grind their teeth because it is usually done at night when they are asleep. Over time the constant grinding forces on the teeth cause them to become significantly worn down.  Once we restore the mouth with veneers, this grinding or clenching often called bruxing, can damage the veneers. This is why each patient we place veneers on is prescribed a night guard or occlusal guard. The guard is a custom made protective piece of extremely durable acrylic that usually fits over your upper teeth and allows the lower jaw to slide over the guard, keeping your lower teeth from bumping into your upper veneers. It is important to wear your guard nightly and have it checked periodically for excess wear.
