Skipped a Cleaning? Here's What's Happening in Your Mouth (and What You Can Do!)
You probably know by now that twice-yearly dental cleanings at our Alafaya, FL dental office are the foundation for a healthy mouth. But what happens when you skip a cleaning? Does it really matter that much?
It actually matters a lot! We preach proper oral hygiene practices because they’re essential for good dental health. And while it’s great that you’re brushing your teeth regularly, you simply must combine your efforts with professional cleanings.
What’s Happening in Your Mouth
While you are enjoying all your favorite foods and drinks, a sticky film called plaque is forming on your teeth and attracting bacteria. Conscientious brushing removes plaque from the surfaces of teeth you can see and reach with your toothbrush. But your brush just can’t get into all the tight crevices and spaces between teeth.
The longer plaque sits on your teeth, the longer bacteria have a chance to attack healthy teeth and gum tissue. Then, after a while, plaque above and below the gum line turns into a hard substance called tartar (or calculus). Tartar can eventually lead to receding gums and gum disease.
Tartar is also a problem if you skip cleanings because it is impossible to remove with a toothbrush. Only a qualified dental hygienist has the skill and instruments to completely remove tartar.
What You Can Do
The obvious answer is not to skip cleanings because without them, your mouth just isn’t healthy. It really helps to book your appointments far in advance. When you have a standing appointment, you are more likely to follow through with it.
And please don’t ever worry that we will scold you or make you feel badly for missing dental cleanings at our Alafaya, FL dental office. We are here to help you with your dental health where it stands right now, and we’re just glad you are being proactive!
