Except for the final reveal, the most exciting part of your smile makeover is the consultation. Dr. Michaelson loves talking to our patients about their smile goals and co-creating a treatment plan to achieve them.
He will talk to you about how you would like us to help you, and together we’ll choose the appropriate treatments and explain how they work and how they will benefit you.
What happens during my smile consultation?
Your smile consultation is your opportunity to share with us your dreams and expectations for a more attractive smile. Dr. Michaelson first talks to you about what your goals are and how we can help you achieve them. He evaluates your overall oral health to determine if there are any underlying issues we need to address before starting any cosmetic treatment.
We want you to be an active participant in the planning process from the initial consultation through to the final reveal. Dr. Michaelson provides all the guidance you need by listening to your concerns, answering your questions thoroughly, and offering all the treatment options available to help you achieve your goals for a smile you can’t wait to show off.
Professional Teeth Whitening
Do you offer in-office teeth whitening?
If you need a quick, effective way to brighten your smile, Zoom! in-office teeth whitening at our Orlando dental office will have you in, out, and on your way in a little over an hour.
The Zoom! system works with a light-activated hydrogen peroxide solution that lifts underlying stains. The use of the Zoom! lamp has been shown to increase the effectiveness of the whitening gel significantly. Our Zoom! in-office whitening treatment produces brilliant results and can whiten most teeth by as many as six shades in just one appointment!
How do professional take-home whitening kits work?
Many of our patients either don’t have time to come to our office for whitening or would prefer to whiten at their pace in the privacy of their homes. We offer Zoom! Nite White take-home kits that include customized whitening trays that are made using impressions of your teeth.
The trays conform perfectly to all tooth surfaces to keep the gel on your teeth and prevent it from coming into contact with tender gum tissue. Use your trays with the provided whitening gel every day for about 20 to 30 minutes. After two weeks of consistent use, most patients see a smile that’s about six shades brighter than when they started.
How can I keep my smile bright after whitening?
Professional whitening is an easy treatment that dramatically improves the brightness of your smile. Here are a few tips for maintaining your newly-whitened smile.
Avoid staining drinks and foods - Coffee, tea, colas, red wine, dark juices, tomato sauce, soy sauce, and curries are just a few of the culprits that stain your teeth. Stick with water or light-colored drinks to avoid staining or use a straw to minimize the contact the drink has with your teeth.
Don’t use tobacco products – Tobacco use is one of the major causes of tooth staining and discoloration. Quitting is difficult, but you can’t smoke and have a bright white smile. While vaping or using e-cigarettes aren’t without their health risks, they won’t produce the severe stains that mar your smile.
Follow these guidelines, practice proper oral hygiene daily, and visit our Orlando dental office routinely to get the most out of your whitening treatment.
What problems do porcelain veneers fix?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored porcelain that we bond to the front of your teeth to create a new, blemish-free surface. We commonly use veneers to:
- Conceal chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
- Even out gaps and spacing between teeth
- Improve the appearance of a poorly-shaped tooth
- Conceal misalignments for a more symmetrical smile
- Hide severe tooth staining or discoloration
The process of placing veneers typically requires two to three visits to complete. Since they are customized for your smile, your final veneers will look natural and blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth.
How should I care for my new veneers?
While porcelain veneers are relatively maintenance free, if you want them to last, you have to maintain good oral health.
First, brush twice and floss once daily to avoid developing decay or gum disease that would compromise your veneer. Teeth grinding (bruxism) places excessive force on veneers and can cause them to chip or crack. But we can customize a mouthguard to prevent your teeth from coming into contact and damaging your veneer. Remember, anything that can chip your tooth can also chip your veneer, so avoid chewing ice or biting down on hard foods like crunchy chips or nuts.
It’s also crucial to follow through with your routine exams and cleaning appointments at our Orlando dental office. When he sees you every six months, Dr. Michaelson will ensure your teeth are healthy and that your veneers are intact.
Cosmetic Dental Bonding
I chipped my front tooth! How can you help?
Chipping a tooth is upsetting, but fixing the aesthetics of your smile is usually fairly straightforward. If it’s a tiny chip, we can often smooth it over without any additional treatment.
A larger chip may require dental bonding or even a porcelain veneer to conceal it. It's easy to repair a chipped tooth, but more importantly, we need to determine the underlying reason why the damage occurred so we can prevent it from happening again.
Some common reasons teeth chip are:
- A tooth is already weakened by decay
- Biting down too hard on ice, hard candy, or nuts
- Teeth grinding or bruxism
- Trauma or injury to your mouth
Dr. Michaelson will expertly repair the chip, get to the source of the problem, and provide the treatment you need to keep your teeth strong and healthy.
Which is right for me – dental bonding or veneers?
Bonding and veneers are used to correct aesthetic smile flaws, and there are many instances where we could choose either approach to help you achieve your smile goals.
With dental bonding, Dr. Michaelson uses tooth-colored composite filling material that he builds up on your teeth. He sculpts the material to recontour a tooth to alter its shape or size and improve its appearance.
Bonding is fast, affordable, non-invasive, and reversible because we don’t have to alter the underlying tooth structure.
Veneers are custom-shaped shells of porcelain that we bond to the front surface of your tooth to conceal wide gaps and uneven spacing, reshape a tooth for a better appearance, and even conceal slight tooth misalignment. Because we need to alter the underlying tooth to accommodate the veneers, the procedure is not reversible.
The method we choose depends on your smile goals, the aesthetic problem we need to address, your budget, and your timeline. You can count on Dr. Michaelson to help you decide which is right for you.
Aesthetic Dental Crowns
What cosmetic problems do dental crowns fix?
Dental crowns are well-known for their ability to restore a damaged tooth to full function and improve its appearance. At Alafaya Dentistry, we offer esthetic dental crowns made of gold, all porcelain, or zirconia.
Both porcelain and zirconia crowns allow us to closely match the restoration to surrounding teeth so we can also use them to correct aesthetic flaws. All-porcelain crowns allow light to pass through and provide a translucent appearance similar to dental enamel. Zirconia crowns are similar in appearance to porcelain but offer superior strength and durability.
Since a crown completely encases your tooth, we use them to:
- Reshape a tooth to improve its appearance
- Cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- Conceal and protect a cracked or broken tooth
