Cleanings

Some people are more prone to tarter build up despite their oral hygiene efforts. Diet, age, and genetics also contribute to how often Dr. Michaelson will recommend you visit for a cleaning. Receiving Preventative care on the suggested interval will contribute to your overall health and likely keep your dental expenses lower.

How often do I need my teeth cleaned?

The recommended frequency for dental cleanings is based on a patient’s individual need. Many factors play a role in how often a person will need to visit our office. One of the things we take into consideration is the heath of the gums and underlying bone.

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease in the past it is likely that damage done by the bacteria has left irregularities in the gum and bone which will require more frequent visits. We also evaluate how much plaque and tater a patient accumulates.

Why do I need to have my teeth professionally cleaned when I clean them myself?

Any plaque that sits on the teeth throughout the day or night hardens and becomes tarter (Calculus). This calculus cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. It needs to be removed professionally. Regular dental cleanings keep this tarter removed to keep your gums strong and healthy.

Why can’t I just have a regular cleaning?

Dental cleaningsIf it has been a while since you’re last cleaning or you have accumulated more the average amount of tarter you may require a cleaning done in two parts. Once tarter has built up in-between the teeth and under the gums a mild gum infection called gingivitis starts.

This infection causes the gums to bleed very easily when provoked. During the first cleaning we use an ultrasonic scaler to remove hardened tarter from underneath the gum and in-between the teeth.

Healthy gums don’t bleed. Small openings remain where the plaque and tater were removed from.

We typically put you on a medicated mouth rinse to facilitate healing of the gums for two weeks. At the second cleaning appointment the gums have tightened back around the teeth and the presence of infection is gone.

We will likely use a combination of the ultrasonic scaler, hand instruments, and polish the teeth.
