Bone Grafting-Ridge Preservation
Bone grafting is typically done in conjunction with an extraction. Once the roots of the tooth are removed a void called a socket is created. If the void is not filled with bone material the surrounding bone will collapse and the ridge becomes very thin. Placing bone after an extraction will promote ridge preservation and be a better foundation for a future implant or removable appliance.

This is an image of a socket packed with bone material to preserve the ridge. Once the bone is packed a membrane covers and protects the site and dissolves over the course of several weeks.
